We Want to Hear from YOU!

Hello lovely readers!

InnerScoops has been up and running for just over a week now, and we want to thank YOU for your readership and support. We've got some exciting stuff coming at you this week, but we would love to hear from you! We love to get your input on anything end everything, but here's a few things we've been talking about in the Innermix family:

  • Monday's topic was toxic relationships. Had any experiences with that? Haven't we all? Stay tuned for one of my personal tales of poisonous people soon, but I'd love to hear how you've dealt with these kinds of situations.
  • When we were joking around at the photo shoot, we spitballed some really interesting ideas for the show. One of our hottest topics: online dating! How do you feel about it? Would you, or have you, tried it? And most of all, want us to send one of the Innermix family out into the online dating world and see what happens?!
So tell Innermix what's up: we're always here to listen and make you smile!

Click Click Click: The Innermix Photo Shoot

Even though our photo shoot last weekend was the first time most of us were meeting in person, it felt like a family reunion. After endless sessions, conference calls, and texting back and forth, the whole Innermix team finally met at L’Image Photography in Glendora. We were in full effect: Q4 came out for the shoot, in addition to our fearless leaders Simply D and Jules, the lovely Juanita, the magician-with-a-makeup-brush Lisa, and my awesome co-workers Julia and Tiffany. I was glad to finally meet everyone in person, not only to get to know the team outside the virtual realm but also to redeem what D calls “The Hair.”

I don’t know what it is about a webcam, but for some reason it makes my hair (hereafter known as The Hair) look an absolute mess. Especially when The Hair was red (Hi, my name is Katherine and I am a compulsive hair dyer), on a computer screen it reads as a lion’s mane. My Mac seems to enhance fly-aways, frizz, and cowlicks to the point that The Hair is comically commented on in every videoconference we’ve had. Given The Hair situation, I was most excited to meet the team and prove that I do, in fact, own a brush.

Luckily, the wonderful Lisa (Styles by Lisa) was there to tame any remnants of The Hair and my midterm exhaustion that showed up on Saturday. Working some magic with an oven, old-school irons, and good old-fashioned blending techniques, Lisa beautified me and the rest of the team (even though they didn’t much help in the first place!) before the camera started snapping.

Lisa tames The Hair

Our photographer for the day was Mitch Merritt. Never having been a part of a real photo shoot myself, Mitch made the experience a fun and educational one. I got the chance to be sort of an assistant for a few of our non-studio locations, holding lights for our edgy alley shots and shooting moving video for the neighborhood set ups. Some people may not be down for that, but the film student inside me jumps at any chance to work as a PA and needless to say I loved it. Check out some of Mitch’s other work on the L’Image website or Facebook page.

Mitch was our main man for the day, but we were having our own little photo shoot of the photo shoot. Of the many things I discovered we had in common that day, Tiffany, Julia, and I are total shutterbugs. We spent the entire day snapping candid shots of our happy little family--getting our hair done, trying on different outfits, taking pictures, and just generally being goofy. Between the three of us, we ended up with about 200 pictures of the photo shoot and a bunch of video footage. Check out our next vlog to see how we put all that together!

Julia and Juanita shoot the shoot

One thing everyone needs to know from this experience is that Jules has absolutely killer fashion sense. As you’ll see when we release the photos, the clothes and accessories she brought to the shoot were absolutely to die for. My favorite pieces were the amazing studded wedge boots (pictured below) and her canary yellow maxi skirt, but it was her array of colorful jeans that inspired me to go HAM at the Gap the next day. I am officially a devotee to her style, and I am seriously considering having WWJW (What Would Jules Wear) bracelets made up—with Jules’ design approval, of course.

Jules' Self Defense School Lesson 1: Fashion can double as weaponry.

We got some really dope shots for "The Innermix Show" as well as Innermix P&P during the session, but what I’ll take away from that more than anything were the bonds formed with our team. I’m a tech junkie and live my life with a cell phone perma-fused to my hand, but there is something about finally meeting people in person that helps everything click. From chatting with Juanita about our mutual love for Once Upon a Time to finding out we had the same weekend plans over boba with Tiffany and Julia to sharing pizza on the floor of the studio when we all got ravenously hungry, it was the perfect example of what Innermix is all about: fun, laughter, advice, and family.

Lights, Camera, Action: The Innermix Photoshoot

Photo shoots. To some, those words send a shiver down the spine, taking them pack to the awkward days of school photos. But to others, those two exciting words translate to a great opportunity to just have some fun while getting some creative. I personally fall into the first group, unless I’m getting my picture taken for Instagram.

Editor's Note: Tiff may not love having her picture taken, but doesn't she look adorable here?!
Getting her hair done my the lovely and talented Lisa.

But as for Simply D and Jules, it’s another exciting day to get some work done for a bunch of upcoming projects and plans that they plan to unveil during the year. This photo shoot in particular was special because we put together new images for their upcoming single, “Dance to the Music," for "THE INNERMIX SHOW", and for INNERMIX P&P in the upcoming year.

Unlike Adriana Lima or Miranda Kerr, most of us don’t roll out of bed looking fabulous and ready for a photo shoot. It can actually take quite a bit of preparation to look camera-friendly. Simply D and Jules share their tips on how they prepare for their photo shoots, and the steps that they take in order to look their best in their photos.

We’ve all heard this before, but don’t underestimate how the importance of taking care of your body. That means eating well and staying hydrated. Your health will show on your face and on your body, no matter the amount of makeup you pack on or the Photoshopping you have done; nothing can truly recreate naturally glowing, radiant skin.

“Great skin is always key for women and men. If you sleep well and take care of your body by eating right and drinking a lot of water, it will all reflect on the camera, which is something you can’t fake with Photoshop,” says Jules.

Want great skin like Jules? Drink water, eat well, get some sleep, and repeat!

And of course, we can’t forget exercise! Lately, Simply D and Jules have been spending some time in the martial arts studio. I bet you didn’t know that they could kick some butt too, and not just in the recording studio! A combination of Tiger Claw Kung Fu with a little bit of Tae Kwon do and some Aikido, their workout is sure to work up quite a sweat and get your blood pumping. This is key to turning on that healthy glow, on the surface and on the inside.

“When I’m in about to move forward into something hectic, I try to prepare myself mentally and physically,” says Simply D. But you don’t have to break boards with your forehead (ouch!) or know how to grapple your opponent to the ground in order to look great in your photos, although that would make for some pretty awesome action shots. What is the real secret to taking exceptional photos?

A positive attitude and mindset is what you really want to be going for, which is something that comes from within. “If you feel good, you’ll look good and give off an attitude that gets captured in the camera. And try to stay positive, and have a positive mindset, because that also comes across and gets captured on camera,” said Jules with a smile. "Positive people help make photo shoots better,” adds Simply D.

Getting down with some of those good vibes D and Jules were talking about

So the next time you find yourself attempting to put together a productive and effective regime for an upcoming photo shoot, remember what you put inside your body is what you end up putting out, whether it be healthy fruits and vegetables, an hour of cardio per week or several afternoons a week kicking someone else’s butt in Tae Kwon Do (or getting your butt kicked instead, which is in my case…). Whatever madness is to ensue this upcoming weekend is sure to translate into some really amazing photos, which I’m just as excited to see as you are.

Until next time,

Tiffany

“Dance to the Music”--A Trip Back to the Good Old Days

Remember those good old days when music was about letting it all go on the dance floor and having a good time? When we could all take part in joining dance circles without being too self-conscious, even when we resorted to the Tootsie Roll or the Cabbage Patch?

I may not know how to make that Tootsie roll, but I think you get my point. Dance music used to bring us together, moving in unison and expressing through the beat. The music of the 90’s was about feeling good, vibing off your surroundings, and allowing the song to take over. People didn't need all the alcohol, the drugs and the blatant sexuality to have a good time in the club or at a party.

Miss those days? Well, we do, too. But good news! Innermix is here to bring it back with their first single, “Dance to the Music.”

“Dance to the Music” can't be pigeonholed into one genre, because it encompasses so many styles. Depending on how you hear it, you may walk away calling it Hip Hop, R&B, Dance, Electro, or even Pop. It is the multi-faceted conception of Simply D and Jules’ creative minds, an incredibly fun and energetic electro-club banger that is sure to get anyone back on the dance floor.

Simply D and Jules are excited to have such an upbeat song as their first Innermix single. In D's words, “The song allows us to show that we’re not the super serious, especially because of the radio show where we’re always like, ‘come tell us your troubles, people’. The radio show has helped us establish our morals, but if we’re singing about having a good time, we can spread the message, ‘hey, let’s just be free and have fun, with some responsibility!’”

Simply D and Jules want to remind everyone that you can still have a great time, without the binge drinking, the drug use, and the one-night stands. "Dance to the Music" is about letting loose and connecting with someone through the music, not through substances or sex. In fact, as crazy as it sounds these days, it is possible to let loose and have a good time, while keeping your dignity intact.

“We both miss the 90s and the feel of the music. It was fun. Music still had the undertone of sexuality, but there’s a feel good music and made you want to sing along, not just lose your mind and get high,” emphasize Simply D and Jules. “It was about getting into the emotions and getting into the groove, the fun nature and enjoying the music and its surroundings.”

Isn’t that what dancing in the club should be all about? Why do we have to pass out in the bathroom or throw up all over the toilet to call it a good night? You don't have to be a hot mess to have fun with your friends and spread the positive energy around. Enjoy the music and just dance!

This kind of good, clean fun is what Innermix is all about. Don't take everything so seriously, but be responsible when you shake off your troubles. Feel good spending time with your friends and looking out for each other, and don't worry about looking stupid or foolish while you're getting it on the dance floor. And don't be afraid to laugh, even if it's at yourself.

When you get to hear “Dance to the Music," you better be close to a dance floor because the urge to break it down will be uncontrollable. But hey, if you're not, that's okay, too; dance the night (or the day) away wherever you are.

Until next time,

Tiffany

Meet Katherine: In the Studio, In the Mix

Editor's Note:
You already know D and Jules, but now its time to meet our promotions and publicity intern, Katherine! Innermix interns Tiffany and Kat (that's me!) will be be updating the blog weekly with the own fresh perspectives, so get to know them and let them know what you think in the comments.

So D and Jules don’t know this yet, but the first time I met them I was intimidated, to say the least. This had nothing to do with their personalities, which are as warm and friendly in real life as they are on air—their jaw-dropping talent made me nervous about what I had gotten myself into.

I first had the chance to meet D and Jules in person in mid-January, after a long process of digital interviews and conferences about Innermix and what I could potentially bring to the team. Excited by the promise of working with a multi-faceted entertainment and media duo, I was hooked from our first phone call and thrilled when they asked me to come onto the team as a promotions and publicity intern. I was ready to start the New Year with a new work family, and itching to put faces to the voices I had become so familiar with.

Our first meeting was in the recording studio. In keeping with my annoying paranoia regarding tardiness (I regularly set four alarms and show up 15 minutes early to everything, out of the irrational fear that my clock has slowed down or tricked me into thinking I have more time), I got to the studio super early and waited awkwardly in my car for the illustrious Innermix.

As I drifted off into my headspace, the details of which are to bizarre for me to expose you, our dear readers, to so early in this blogosphere, I got the call from D that he and Jules had arrived. I met them in the middle of the street, exchanged pleasantries, and walked into the home studio with them. Here we met Quantum 4 (see Tiffany’s post for more on Q4), who ran some beats for D and Jules to vibe on before picking a couple to work on that night.

I spent four hours in the studio with Innermix that night, and probably spoke a total of 20 words the entire time; I’m surprised that D and Jules didn’t think I was a mute who had hired some kind of Cyrano to do all my phone interviews. They were so happy, friendly, and welcoming, and I was just in shock and awe. My tongue was rendered immobile by the crazy creative, terrifically talented energy flowing between the two of them. I was captivated to the point of silence.

Now, I’m not exactly green when it comes to working with creative people. A dancer first and a writer second, my life is blessedly filled with artistic individuals who invent as easily as they breathe. But dance is an entirely different creative process, what was going on in that recording studio was magic. D and Jules groove off of each other in a way that is unheard of; they come into the studio cold, coming up with concepts and lyrics on the spot based on whatever beats they’re given. D is straight up improv, blurting out his lyrics without ever touching pen to paper and seamlessly mixing different rhymes over the same beat until something sticks. Jules is a little more traditional, carrying a spiral bound notebook into the studio with her and jotting down lyrics in purple pen—I will always remember that purple pen. But when she walks into the recording booth, boy does that girl have an ear for music! She takes the same lyrics and makes them feel different in every take, just by manipulating her voice via what has to be perfect pitch.

In those same four hours when I was doing my best impression of a mime, they laid out two songs. A process that can take days done in hours. Twice. If that doesn’t intimidate a person, I don’t know what would. How was I going to keep up with them? How could I become a part of this pair, so in tune that they finish each other’s sentences and lyrics without even trying? Could I possibly live up to what they needed?
Well, the wonder I first felt in the face of their creative chemistry and talent has never faded, but I am glad to report that the intimidation has disappeared. The second time I met them, at Starbucks as the Santa Ana winds beat against the trees, I got to know them even better and became more comfortable with the speed and diversity of their work. I got friendly with what D and Jules, two people who are a genuine pleasure to work and talk with, and began to have some of that faith in myself that they seem to have in me.

Turns out, there was no need to be intimidated. Even if you aren’t sure you believe in yourself, D and Jules do. Their confidence in you is infectious, and I hope that people feel that from their radio show. I feel so fortunate to be a part of the Innermix family, to have a hand in all that they do and but mostly to benefit from the belief and support that D and Jules provide for the whole team. Just a few short months with Innermix has brought me to a new level of self-confidence, and I look forward to helping this wonderful family grow in the same way it has helped me.

Catch y’all on the flip,

Kat

PS: Aww, I’m cute, huh? Don’t worry, there is sarcasm and levity abounds in the next post. Just needed to keep it real for a second and document the transformative, nurturing experience of working with Innermix.

Meet Tiffany: A Visit to the Recording Studio

Editor's Note:
You already know D and Jules, but now its time to meet our intern and head writer, Tiffany! Innermix interns Tiffany and Kat (that's me!) will be be updating the blog weekly with the own fresh perspectives, so get to know them and let them know what you think in the comments.

As you know, Innermix has a pretty erratic schedule and are often running around, tackling multiple projects at once. Despite this, they always manage to make time for one of the things that they love best: writing songs and recording music. On a cool evening on January 20th, I had the privilege of accompanying them, along with Julia, the online public relations coordinator for Innermix and a dear friend, to the music production studio “The Studio”, to work with Quantum 4 Entertainment, a musical production company consisting of two extremely talented young men, Arthur, 18, and Jack, 25.

Innermix and Q4 had been in the midst of recording one of their new singles “Falling Apart”. While the song  was nearly put together, there was still a lot more work that had to go into it. There were harmonies and hooks that needed to be added, words that needed to be changed and matched to the beat, and key changes that had to be inserted into the song.

In fact, when it comes to recording any song, a lot more work goes into taking it from just a song and turning it into something that allows the listener to feel. Simply D and Jules often ad-libbed lyrics, with Jules stopping every now and then to scribble down flashes of brilliance and ideas in a simple notebook she carried with her. What was most surprising is that a lot of the words and flow that went into this song were thought of on the spot. Simply D, a freestyle singer and rapper, would dive right in, with poetic verses cascading from his lips, tackling each verse and rhyme to its beat. Jules’ style of songwriting was different. She expressed her ideas through her writing, her hands working vigorously across her notebook to transcribe her creativity into new verses and harmonies.

Their creative process knows no boundaries; when they heard the music, they applied it wholeheartedly from within. This, I really enjoyed watching. When it came to turning that song into an exchange between two lovers, they delivered it with such power that I could imagine the both of them falling apart inside a little. But of course, as soon as the music was off, they were back to their old, goofy selves.

Just because Simply D and Jules were in their creative zone didn’t mean that they didn’t take the time to have fun with it. Believe me, they had plenty. Of course, when you’re stuck in the recording studio into the wee hours of the night, the only thing other than to fall into delirium is to have a good time and turn it from a job into a party. Plenty of jokes and banter were exchanged between the both of them, while the rest of us engaged in intense discussions over…smart phones and alien abductions? Okay, never mind, you don’t want to know about that.

Back in the recording booth, Simply D graced us with his rapping talent to turn his tender, wistful verse in the song into an angry, melancholic rage, reminiscent to that of Eminem’s verse in “Love the Way You Lie”. You could imagine the howls of laughter that elicited. It was so convincing that I secretly wished that they were going to use that instead. Perhaps in a remix one day ;)

One thing I was blown away by was Jules’ talent for listening to the music and then adding different harmonies. When one harmony was added to a verse, the feel of the song completely changed from melancholic to heart-wrenching. It’s amazing how the addition of both harmonies and dissonance can take one song into a whole other level. One could produce a song in many different ways and yet, remaster it into something even more evocative than its precursor. When it came to delivering the song’s message not just through singing a melody, but introducing the highs and lows of every word uttered, Jules delivered it beyond your typical tragic love song.

As for Q4, Arthur and Jack were helpful and patient, tweaking every beat and note to nail the feeling of the song. Innermix may be what you hear on the surface, but Arthur and Jack’s talents serve as the backbone to making it all happen. Despite the recording studio’s simple yet modern appearance, it houses the creative gifts of the brothers and allows them to take their passion and love for making music and turn it into something easy for the listener to identify with.

Music has the power to bring us all together. I was able to see that with my own eyes when I observed how much work and enthusiasm  Innermix and Q4 put into producing a song. But it is in their humility and passion, not merely their talents, where they are truly able to translate those ever so familiar feelings of having loved and lost into something we can truly feel. And I believe that when it comes to producing a timeless song, this is the most important.

At the end of the recording session, we hung out and chatted with Arthur and Jack before heading out. The jokes and laughs added some much needed warmth to the bitter chill of the late winter evening. As Simply D and Jules wrapped up to prepare for another busy day following them, Julia and I headed off in the other direction in positive spirits and in search of the nearest In-n-Out.

Until next time,

Getting to Know the Team: Julia

On a cool, mid-March night, I’m in the middle of interviewing Simply D and Jules to gather information and material to write this entry. After a while into the interview, I inquire with a very basic question: “How has the experience been like working with Julia?”

“A roller-coaster,” exclaim Simply D and Jules confidentially in perfect unison, before bursting into loud laughter for a good minute.

Julia is the online Public Relations Coordinator and Office Manager for INNERMIX P&P and has known Simply D and Jules for over two and a half years. Since she has had the opportunity to see the company grow from such a young age into a forward moving, dynamic entity and grow alongside the both of them, it is no wonder that her relationship with them has evolved beyond merely employer and employee; she’s like a little sister to them.

In order to describe the journey that she has grown into with Innermix, both as a company and as an entertainment group, both Julia and Innermix possess no shortage of anecdotes, detailing her growth from that of an ambitious college student whose desires for mentorship led her to the company to a young woman who is continuously seeking to better herself, professionally and personally and will do what it takes to get there.

By figuring out what she wanted to do with her life and allowing herself the time to make mistakes and learn from them, Julia has harnessed her passion for learning about social media marketing and public relations and utilized her skillset into a very valuable, indispensible asset: a fervor for what she does and a desire to bring the company to new heights.

“Most people will not know how much work she does behind the scenes. A lot of the things that happen go through her. She has made the effort to understand our brand and how we work and continuously ask how can we improve. She’s got a vision for us and we always love people who have vision,” explains Simply D and Jules.

In a company that emphasizes working as a team and connecting with the people that you work with, it’s not hard to see why she has stayed in such a unique experience. After all, there are no routine days when working with Innermix, no humdrum, monotonous or repetitive tasks assigned just to keep you busy. In fact, team members may find days where of trying to run around and accomplish multiple tasks at once without rest until the wee hours of the morning. And she loves it all.

“I just like being able to be part of something that allows me to develop my ideas and skillset. A lot of companies just want you to work, whereas Innermix is about growing. It’s about being a part of the team instead of just working for the team,” said Julia.

It is this tenacity and this drive for accomplishment that has allowed her to move the company forward in both of the online space and as a staff. By putting the team first and learning how to take criticism well and apply it towards self-improvement, she has developed the ability to bounce back from whatever challenges she meets along the way.

Despite the ups and occasional downs that she has had during this roller-coaster ride, at the end of the day, she doesn’t hesitate to express a deeply seated gratitude to the opportunities that have come her way and an overall positive outlook on her experience here.

”Personally, I’m a bit of a dreamer. And because of the way they move forward and inspire me, it makes me want to continue working with them,” she adds with a serene smile.

And it’s these dreams that keep the company and the team moving forward. After all, the driving forces towards success often include dreaming big and dreaming far.

Friends with Benefits: So Who Does This Benefit, Exactly?

Ahhh, friends with benefits. Just the phrase alone often elicits intense debate among those who advocate for it and those who stand against it. On a past episode of "THE INNERMIX SHOW", Simply D and Jules discussed the terms, the factors that go into play, the reasons why people choose to engage in it, and most importantly, the benefits. Who exactly does it benefit?

Warning: Your friends with benefits experience probably won't turn out as cute as this one.

First, let’s think about why people choose to engage in these kinds of relationships. Is it out of loneliness? Fear of being alone? Fear of commitment? The opportunity to get some play while searching for an actual relationship? The answer is: all of the above. People have different reasons on why they would choose to compromise themselves for a half-hearted substitute of a relationship.

Sometimes, the friends-with-benefits situation happens because certain people are looking for someone to spend time with, but not fully commit to. They go in head-first while holding on to the notion that emotions will not be involved….yeah, right. This is exactly how people get into situations that resemble the plots of silly romantic comedies. Except most of the time, there are no happy endings.

Men and women, alike, think that being friends-with-benefits with someone will create that type of situation where their relationship will turn into something more, which usually involves sex. In giving the other person sex, they will build a bond together. And this bond will grow into that of emotional attachment and a desire to take the relationship further.

“Sex does not necessarily mean intimacy, but a lot of people take it as intimacy,” points out Simply D.

Now, here is where things get a little messy. Even if both parties involved may have talked about leaving emotions out of the relationship, when one person starts getting way more invested in the other, someone gets hurt. No one wants to hear, “Oh, but I thought we were just banging.” Ouch.

Pictured: Hollywood, not reality. It's much...messier.

So what is a person to do in this type of situation? There are men and women out there who are looking for the real thing, that loving and honest relationship that may eventually lead to marriage. And there are those who are looking for the exact opposite. Be honest. Be truthful. Be upfront about who you are and what you are looking for.

“If you are looking for something real, then act like it. Be about it,” emphasizes Simply D and Jules. “You have to keep on talking to yourself, reminding yourself that if you don’t want to be used for playtime, then tell yourself that you will not be anyone’s plaything.”

So, let’s take a look at everything we’ve just talked about. Friends-with-benefits? Do or don’t? Well, when Deon asks Jules her this very question, Jules took to some good ol' fashioned cartoon sound effects: SMACK.

Touche, Jules.

Until next time,

Tiffany

Jeremy Lin: Lin-spiring Innermix, One Multimedia Personality at a Time

Linvincible. Linspiration. Mr. Lincredible. In a short span of time, the sensation of Jeremy Lin has been sweeping through countless media outlets, causing media frenzy over the Knicks basketball player, who appeared from out of nowhere. Jeremy Lin has been one of the fastest growing brands to hit the sports industry to this date, spurning endorsements, ranging from Nike to even Ben and Jerry’s ice cream! For the past few weeks, even my own Facebook newsfeed has dedicated its own section to him, with at least over eight people talking about him in their statuses. It really is Linsanity.

A Harvard graduate who went from playing college basketball without a scholarship at Harvard University, to playing for the D-League, to getting waived from the Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets, to becoming one of the biggest stars today in the NBA? So many minority groups, not just Asians, have struggled to break down the negative stereotypes that have haunted them in the media, such as the in the entertainment industry and the sports industry, and in society. And even though this fight is not over yet, Lin has broken some of the barriers that have prevented Asians from having a voice in these outlets.

Yet, despite all the buzz surrounding him, there seems to be one person who isn’t crazy about him, someone who views him as not the superhero that people are making him out to be, but just as a humble being who owes his gifts and opportunities to God—Jeremy Lin, himself. He attributes his successes not on coincidence and not on himself, but to the paths that God has put him on and the doors that God had opened for him at the right time.

This story of the underdog’s struggle, the closing of the wrong doors and the opening of the right ones resonate closely with that of Innermix and their story. In the beginning, Simply D and Jules struggled with the negative stereotypes so often attributed to the color of their skin, doubled with constant doubt in the music industry over their talents. As an entertainment group consisting of a Black man and an Asian woman, one can imagine the stereotypes and the opposition that they faced in the industry. After coming a long way from hearing empty promises and the words, “no” all the time, to finally rising to the confident, self-sufficient and visionary group they are today, they have found that after all this time, things are really starting to take off and the dreams that they have dared to hold onto are beginning to take flight.

“We see a lot of similarities with what’s happening in his life right now. Because there’s two forms of fighting: a silent fight to remain who you are in the spotlight and the loud, boisterous fight when you feel like people are trying to tear down everything you have to say,” said Simply D.

The struggle to be respected and heard for Asians and other minority groups isn’t over yet. After the ESPN debacle where a writer was fired for a racial slur directed at Lin, and other countless incidents involving criticism and jokes at the expense of Lin’s race rather than over his talents and abilities, Lin must continue to endure the criticism and negativity that surrounds him, which is a price that many minorities who end up in the spotlight. And like Lin, Innermix has heard their fair share of negativity and doubt, surrounding just how exactly they are able to make things work for them, how they are able to synergize so well when they are so different. When asked what sort of opposition that they expect to face, as they continue to grow and progress as a group, they understand that it’s nothing that they haven’t heard already. And that’s what has fostered their growth, their strength and their ability to thrive in the industry, despite all the negativity.

Despite the long way Simply D and Jules have come, one thing is for certain: they have chosen to remain humble, even in the midst of the spotlight. Yes, they have achieved great things. As hosts of a weekly radio show that has reached international success, actors, songwriters, multimedia personalities, they are truly doing it all. And though it’s only going to get better, they continued to attribute their achievements and success to God, who has laid out the path that they find themselves trekking on towards their dreams.

“It was God’s way of making sure that the correct doors open at the right time and the wrong ones close at the right time. Right now, I’m so excited for this year and next, I feel in my bones every neuron in my body, that God is opening the correct doors right now,” said Jules.

When the spotlight shines upon you, and you find yourself constantly in the center of attention, it can become too easy to get caught up in yourself. But it takes a really humble and down-to-earth person to stay modest and grateful to those who have put you in the position that you are today.

“All these people, all these things came into my life, and they’re all blessings from God. And now that I look back, I realize that these are His fingerprints all over my story,” said Jeremy Lin.

What Jeremy Lin symbolizes is not just that of achieving the American Dream. He symbolizes putting your faith in not only yourself, but also in God. He symbolizes holding onto your dreams and not giving up to the negative voices and stereotypes that attempt to tear you down. The obstacles that you face in your life pave the way for the successes and the blessings that will come your way at the right time. This is his story, but it's so much more than that. This is Innermix’s story.

In fact, this may even be your story.

Until next time,

Tiffany

Getting to Know the Team: Katherine

One of the best parts about working with Innermix is the amazing team that Simply D and Jules have put together over the past year. Although many of us work on different platforms and specialize in certain aspects of the company, everyone here is dedicated to bringing this company to new heights, while of course, learning and having fun at the same time. And what better way to give you the inside scoop on Innerscoops on just who our talented and dynamic team members are and how they help make the magic happen, than by introducing them to you?

As Promotions/Publicity Intern of Innermix, Katherine Moncrief has been vital to the company for bringing together many of the projects that we have set up for this year. In fact, you’re actually looking at one of them right now! After running a series of successful blogs, Katherine not only is able to apply her vast knowledge of the inner workings of social media and content building to this blog, but also to design a multitude of marketing strategies for some upcoming Innermix products, such as their new single and their radio show.

“She integrates everything that Innermix is doing. She helps to promote us in the entertainment space, the social media space and also in the company space. She incorporates it all and accents the brand on each and every front, which is something that we love,” says Simply D.

So what is it about working with Innermix that makes it a truly unique and exciting experience for Katherine?

“It keeps you on your toes. It’s a completely different work environment than anything else I’ve done. They give us a lot of freedom, creativity and encourage us try new things. We’re always coming up with things quickly, but not so quickly that you don’t have the opportunity to try new things,” says Katherine. “It’s nice because they really encourage you to just throw out your ideas. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. And if it does, then great!”

Because of Simply D and Jules’s positive nature and can-do attitudes, Katherine is really able to foster this opportunity into something that helps move her forward on not only a professional level, but also on a personal level.

“They’re really into the personal level of business. Its kind of funny because with this opportunity, I get to do business on a micro level where they’re really into meeting people and having that relationship with them, but we’re also doing the macro blogging and reaching out to tons of people. They bring a diverse approach into what they do and what I do,” explains Katherine.

In this competitive economy, not everyone gets the opportunity to do what they really love to do. But what’s exciting about working with Innermix is that the fun and games never really do go away, even when we’re all seriously into our work and scrambling around to get everything done at the same time. The warmth, the positive energy, its all there at the end of the day.

Wistfully reminiscing when she met Simply D and Jules for the first time, Katherine recalls their warm welcome and the positive energy that she was greeted with at the recording studio, where she got to experience firsthand the different sides of Simply D and Jules and what makes them click.

“They work so well together, and they play off each other incredibly. But they also really made me feel like I’m part of them. They don’t just work and throw me something to do and go on with their day. They really bring us in the Innermix family, we really feel like a group working together as a family,” smiles Katherine.
